if on something like giving the option of a gift of food you are like “but what if i AM crossing a boundary/being rude” i’ll share an exchange between my therapist and myself i often think of:
me: “i just want to respect their boundaries”
therapist: “you can’t respect boundaries when they haven’t expressed them. those aren’t their boundaries, those are your assumptions.”
Respecting the neighbors’ boundaries:
- Not walking on their lawn.
- Not entering their house without knocking & being invited in, even if the door is open.
- Not parking in their driveway.
- Not hosting loud parties after 10pm, especially on weekdays.
It is possible the neighbors are fine with some or all of these things, but mostly, these are near-universal boundaries, especially in US suburbs. These are things that should be negotiated in advance.
Activities that do not show disrespect for their boundaries:
- Bringing food to them to welcome them to the neighborhood.
- Smiling at them and waving hello.
- Pointing at some aspect of their yard (trees, flowers, etc.) and giving a thumbs-up sign.
- Inviting them to a holiday party.
These are all things they might not want. And if so, it’s on them to make that clear.

Tumblr reverted some of the asinine app decisions they made after a concerted feedback effort! So make sure to use this form! It’s what it’s for, but it’s not well advertised!
